Workshops on Green Hydrogen: Opportunities and Challenges

Dr. Walid Abbas, Deputy Chairman of the New Urban Communities Authority for Planning and Projects and Supervisor of the Minister of Housing’s Office, announced the organization of two workshops titled “Green Hydrogen: Opportunities and Challenges” at the Urban Development Authority offices in the cities of Badr and New Heliopolis. This initiative aligns with directives from Eng. Sherif El Sherbini, Minister of Housing, focusing on exploring innovative ideas and solutions for sustainable development in line with Egypt’s Vision 2050.

Dr. Abbas highlighted that the workshops aimed to introduce green hydrogen as a future energy source, discussing its uses, production methods, and potential for using methane from sewage treatment. Topics also included the future of green hydrogen production through water electrolysis, its export potential, and the comparative advantages of hydrogen-powered versus electric vehicles. Challenges and strategies for adopting green hydrogen as a clean energy source were also covered.

The workshops provided practical explanations on producing green hydrogen via water electrolysis, the Egyptian vision for localizing green hydrogen production, and strategies for mitigating risks associated with these projects. They also focused on the economic benefits and sustainable impacts of green hydrogen production in Egypt.

Mr. Akram Saad, Assistant Deputy Chairman for Financial, Administrative, and Human Resources Affairs, reported that the workshops concluded with several recommendations. These included forming teams to develop comprehensive studies on green hydrogen technology implementation in new cities, coordinating with the New Mansoura City Authority to explore green hydrogen technologies for desalination plants, and organizing field visits and workshops to refine these ideas.

Additional recommendations involved establishing a specialized technical library on green hydrogen in collaboration with research centers and experts, organizing practical workshops at the High Institute of Engineering to convert traditional vehicles to hydrogen-powered ones, and setting up more specialized workshops on topics such as waste management, green energy, and sustainable construction in collaboration with the High Institute of Engineering and other institutions.

The workshops were chaired by Mr. Akram Saad and organized by Dr. Amani Mamdouh, Director of Quality Supervision, and Mr. Samah Magdy, Director of Institutional Development. Key speakers included Dr. Abdullah El Dahshan, Chairman of the Obour Institute, Dr. Magdy Hosny, Deputy Head of the High Institute of Engineering and Technology, and Dr. Osama Abdel-Moneim, an international hydrogen expert and faculty member. The events also included participation from a local association in 6th October City and students from Cairo University and 6th October University.
