The Ministry of Housing announced that the Sludge Treatment Project at Alexandria’s Eastern Purification Plant, which converts sludge into energy, has won the UAE Energy Award. The award, granted biennially by the UAE Supreme Council of Energy, recognizes innovative environmental systems and achievements in energy sustainability.
This project represents a pioneering model within Egypt’s national plan to transition toward a green economy, aligned with Egypt Vision 2030. Originally established in 1993 with a capacity of 200,000 m³/day, the station has undergone multiple development phases, reaching a capacity of 800,000 m³/day in 2022, now serving more than 4 million residents.
The project aims to enhance the plant’s environmental performance by converting sludge into biogas, which supplies 60% of its electricity needs, reducing pollution and odors by 30%, and drying sludge for reuse — all contributing to improved health and environmental conditions in surrounding areas.
The project was partially funded through a loan from the French Development Agency (AFD) and has been praised for supporting Egypt’s strategy under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s leadership to transform waste into valuable resources in pursuit of sustainable development.
The UAE Energy Award honors outstanding initiatives in energy efficiency, alternative energy, and sustainability, promoting a more efficient and sustainable future for the region.
