Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, prime minister, chaired a meeting today at the government headquarters in New Alamein City to review the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants.
The meeting was attended by Ahmed Kouchouk, minister of finance; Engineer Randa El Minshawy, minister of housing, utilities, and urban communities; Engineer Ahmed Omran, deputy minister of housing for utilities; and several officials from the relevant authorities.
The Prime Minister opened the meeting by emphasizing the strategic importance of the wastewater treatment sector as one of the key pillars supporting the development of the country’s infrastructure.
He stressed that monitoring this file is essential to ensuring the efficient operation of treatment plants, maintaining sustainable performance, and complying with environmental standards, with the aim of improving wastewater services nationwide in line with Egypt Vision 2030.
Counselor Mohamed El Homosany, the Official Spokesperson for the Cabinet, stated that the meeting reviewed the implementation status of several wastewater treatment plants, current operating rates, and periodic and preventive maintenance plans. Discussions also addressed a number of challenges and proposed measures to enhance operational efficiency and maximize the utilization of available capacities.
El Homosany further explained that the meeting discussed mechanisms for improving the operation and maintenance system, strengthening coordination among the relevant entities, and securing the technical and financial requirements needed to ensure the continued delivery of efficient services. The discussions also covered expanding the use of treated wastewater in development projects to promote water conservation and achieve sustainable water resource management.
The Cabinet spokesperson also noted that the meeting reviewed the efforts of ministries and relevant authorities in regularly monitoring the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants, in line with the directives of the political leadership. These efforts aim to maximize the utilization of the infrastructure developed by the state while supporting environmental protection and comprehensive development plans.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister directed the continued coordination among ministries and relevant authorities to maximize the use of treated wastewater in accordance with the applicable regulations and standards.
He also emphasized strengthening cooperation among all concerned entities to ensure the sustainable operation of treatment plants and achieve the highest possible economic and environmental returns from wastewater treatment projects.
For her part, Engineer Randa El Minshawy, minister of housing, utilities, and urban communities, presented a report highlighting the operation and maintenance status of several major wastewater treatment plants, including the Abu Rawash Plant in Giza Governorate, with a capacity of 1.6 million cubic meters per day; the Eastern Treatment Plant in Alexandria Governorate, with a capacity of 800,000 cubic meters per day; and the Gabal El Asfar Plant in Qalyubia Governorate, with a capacity of 2.5 million cubic meters per day, underscoring the importance of these facilities in serving a significant portion of the population.
