Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, inspected the seawater desalination plant complex in the Al-Rumeila area of Matrouh Governorate, which has a total capacity of 125,000 cubic meters per day, as part of his tour of the governorate to follow up on a number of development and service projects.
The Prime Minister was accompanied during the tour by Dr. Hany Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation; Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment; Eng. Randa El-Menshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities; and Major General Dr. Mohamed El-Zamlout, Governor of Matrouh.
Integrated Desalination System
The Prime Minister listened to an explanation from Eng. Mostafa El-Shimi, Chairman of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, about the components of the Al-Rumeila seawater desalination plant complex, which represents one of the projects supporting the provision of the governorate’s drinking water needs.
The complex includes the Al-Rumeila “1–2” desalination plant, which operates with a design capacity of 48,000 cubic meters per day and consists of eight desalination units, in addition to tanks with a total storage capacity of up to 20,000 cubic meters.
The system also includes the Al-Rumeila “3” seawater desalination plant, with a production capacity of 12,000 cubic meters, as well as the Al-Rumeila “4” plant, which includes four production units with a capacity of up to 65,000 cubic meters per day.
Expansion Plans
Al-Rumeila “4” plant allows its production capacity to be doubled in the future to reach 130,000 cubic meters per day, as part of plans to expand the plant and enhance its production capabilities.
Eng. Randa El-Menshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, affirmed that Matrouh Governorate receives special attention within the state’s plans for urban and tourism expansion, which requires the development of drinking water and wastewater systems and the upgrading of infrastructure efficiency.
She explained that the ministry considers expanding seawater desalination plants in Matrouh among its priorities as a strategic solution to secure the governorate’s drinking water needs while adhering to regular operation and maintenance programs and maximizing the utilization of available production capacities.
The importance of the Al-Rumeila desalination plant complex comes amid increased water consumption during the summer due to the seasonal rise in the number of residents and visitors, making the enhancement of sustainable water sources an essential element in supporting development across the governorate.
