Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, prime minister, accompanied by officials, inaugurated the East Alexandria Corniche Expansion Project during his tour to inspect a number of development and service projects across Alexandria Governorate today.
Following the inauguration, Engineer Randa El-Menshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, outlined the components of the East Alexandria Corniche Expansion Project, noting that it is one of the key development projects aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving traffic flow along one of the most vital transportation corridors in Alexandria Governorate.
The minister explained that the seaward-side expansion has increased the total width of the Corniche Road to 32.5 meters, including the construction of a two-meter-wide central median. This expansion has enabled the road to accommodate five traffic lanes in each direction instead of three, significantly enhancing traffic flow and reducing congestion along the Corniche.
Engineer Randa El-Menshawy added that the project also included the implementation of a comprehensive coastal protection system along the seaward side of the Corniche to safeguard both the beaches and the roadway from wave action and various weather conditions.
In addition, a new vehicular overpass was constructed at Mohamed Naguib Street to serve traffic traveling from El Mandara toward Montaza, helping to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly around the Sidi Bishr Mosque area.
She further noted that the project included the construction of a new pedestrian tunnel in front of Happy Childhood School, as well as the extension and completion of the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid and Iskandar Ibrahim pedestrian tunnels to align with the new expansion works. The project also involved the installation of traffic signals to ensure safe pedestrian crossings and enhance safety measures throughout the project corridor.
The Minister of Housing emphasized that utility development works covered the installation of electrical infrastructure along the entire seaward expansion route and the central median, in addition to the implementation of the necessary sewage networks throughout the project. These works ensure the integration of essential infrastructure components and support the long-term efficiency and sustainability of the project’s operations and services.
Meanwhile, Engineer Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria, stated that the expansion project will eliminate traffic bottlenecks in the Sidi Bishr area and improve traffic flow along the Alexandria Corniche until the planned diversion of traffic from the Sidi Bishr intersection to Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Street is completed, allowing vehicles to pass beneath the overpass. This will provide smoother vehicle movement and reduce traffic congestion in the area.
Major General Osama El-Genzory, Chairman of the Central Agency for Reconstruction, stated that the Corniche Expansion Project included a comprehensive package of service and infrastructure works. These included the construction of 17 entry and exit gates for beachgoers, equipped with restrooms for both men and women and designated service facilities for beach visitors.
The project also included the implementation of a complete stormwater drainage network along the seaward side of the Corniche, improving the quality of services provided to both residents and visitors.
For his part, Major General Essam El-Gharably, chairman of the Central North Coast Reconstruction Authority, explained that the East Alexandria Corniche Expansion Project extends from the Montaza area to El Mahrousa Hotel over a distance of 5 kilometers. The project included coastal protection works to safeguard the Corniche, as well as the construction of sidewalks, interlock paving, and asphalt surfacing along the entire expansion route.
He added that the project also included the construction of three pedestrian tunnels along its route, including one completely new tunnel, in addition to upgrading two existing tunnels and completing their northern sections following the expansion works. Furthermore, the project included the construction of the 600-meter-long Mohamed Naguib Vehicular Overpass, featuring three traffic lanes serving vehicles traveling from Mansheya toward Montaza.
