Over 120,000 Housing Units Offered in 2024 as Egypt Focuses on Social Justice and Urban Development

Dr. Said Hassanain, Professor of Urban Planning, stated that over 120,000 housing units were made available in 2024, including nearly 78,000 units in the fifth phase of the “Housing for All Egyptians” initiative. These units, along with other offerings in the middle, upper-middle, and luxury categories, contribute to ensuring social justice across various segments of society, preventing the focus on any one specific group.

In an interview with “Extra News” on the evening of January 2, Dr. Hassanain highlighted that the government had also announced 5,000 distinguished housing units, villas, and residential options targeted at higher-income individuals, particularly for expatriates or foreign investors looking to settle in Egypt.

He emphasized the “immense” achievements in housing, particularly the government’s efforts to relocate citizens from unsafe, informal settlements to better-planned areas. This has led to the creation of green spaces that improve the quality of life, such as the redevelopment of areas like Tel El-Aqareb, Sur Magra El-Oyoun, and Lake Ain El-Sira, as well as the Fustat area. Notably, the green space in Fustat Park has expanded from 40 to nearly 200 acres, along with enhanced services in the surrounding areas.

Dr. Hassanain also noted significant progress in Upper Egypt, where there has been a major boom in housing projects and new cities. He pointed out that approximately 160,000 acres of informal settlements, accounting for around 38% of the country’s unplanned residential areas, are being addressed. Additionally, there are 4,500 acres considered unsafe for habitation due to their poor infrastructure, which had previously contributed to urban crime and social challenges.
