The Ministry of Housing held a coordination meeting between the Housing and Utilities Sector and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to initiate the process of updating Egypt’s National Housing Profile. This meeting comes in line with the directives of Eng. Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, reaffirming the crucial role of the Housing and Utilities Sector in supporting the development of housing-related policies, strategies, and studies based on data and in monitoring the practical impact of construction and housing legislation.
This meeting reflects the strong partnership between UN-Habitat and the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt and aims to support national housing and urban development policies in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11, which calls for making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Participating in the meeting were several leaders from the Housing and Utilities Sector at the Ministry, including Eng. Nafisa Hashem, Minister’s Advisor and Supervisor of the Sector, and Eng. Mostafa El-Naggar, Head of the Housing and Utilities Sector. Also in attendance were Ahmed Rizk, Head of the Egypt Office of UN-Habitat, along with a number of technical experts.

During the meeting, discussions centered around the roadmap for updating the National Housing Profile, which aims to strengthen the national framework for evidence-based housing policies in line with Egypt’s demographic, economic, and urban transformations.
The National Housing Profile serves as a key reference document for assessing the housing sector’s conditions in terms of supply, demand, and housing accessibility, as well as governance systems. This update represents a pivotal step toward ensuring that national policies are grounded in accurate, up-to-date data reflecting current realities and promoting inclusive and sustainable urban growth.
The Ministry and UN-Habitat emphasized that housing issues are a top priority within Egypt’s sustainable development agenda. Housing is also a fundamental pillar of the New Urban Agenda and UN-Habitat’s strategic plan, playing a vital role in advancing the principles of social housing, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability.
Representatives of UN-Habitat also presented the recommendations from the second session of the Intergovernmental Expert Group on Adequate Housing for All. The presentations covered global trends and relevant international policies, highlighting lessons learned that could be applied and adapted to the Egyptian context.
