Minister of Housing Stresses the Importance of Providing Integrated Utility Services to Citizens

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, held a meeting to follow up on progress within the utilities sector of the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) and to review the status of several utility projects and the development of services in new cities. The meeting was attended by several officials from the ministry and the authority.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring the regular and integrated provision of drinking water and sanitation services while focusing on meeting future needs. He also stressed the necessity of increasing the installation of prepaid smart water meters across all new cities and completing the implementation of the GIS system to identify the locations of utility networks and establish a comprehensive database to enhance project efficiency.

The Minister pointed out the importance of improving services for both citizens and investors through more efficient mechanisms for settling arrears and developing an electronic system for water meters that includes instant payment and contracting options.

He also called for unifying operational mechanisms across the ministry and enabling bill payment services through mobile applications such as InstaPay and Fawry. In addition, he highlighted the need for a rapid response to customer complaints and the provision of effective solutions to any issues related to the utilities sector.

The meeting discussed the progress of implementing the GIS system for mapping utility networks and conducting hydraulic analyses to keep pace with the continuous expansion of projects. It also reviewed the results of efforts to enhance the performance of the utilities sector and its future goals.

The discussions further included strengthening partnership projects with the private sector, encouraging reliance on national industries and locally made products, improving the efficiency of revenue collection, reducing waste, and rationalizing water consumption. The Minister underscored the necessity of managing industrial water use within new cities under clear governance frameworks.

The Minister also reviewed the status of seawater desalination plant projects under construction or planned, including the New Alamein City Desalination Plant, the East Matrouh Desalination Plant, and an alternative facility south of Alamein.
