Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, held a meeting yesterday evening to review the progress of development in New Sphinx City, spanning approximately 70,000 acres. This fourth-generation city is designed to address informal urban growth while advancing modern urban development. The meeting also covered updates on the process of regularizing the city’s legal status and was attended by ministry officials, representatives from the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA), and city administration leaders.
The meeting began with the minister reviewing presidential decrees related to the establishment of New Sphinx City and additional expansions to its area. Current challenges facing development projects and the city’s population, now at 40,000 residents, were also discussed. Minister El-Sherbiny emphasized the importance of intensifying efforts to achieve the city’s foundational goals, including combating unplanned urban sprawl.
During the session, a detailed presentation was delivered on the city’s strategic and detailed plans. The discussion covered proposed land uses, the division of the city into five sectors, and its connectivity through major roadways, such as the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, the Dabaa-Tahya Misr Axis, and the Regional Ring Road. Key landmarks and the contributions of prominent developers in the first sector were also highlighted.
Updates on the status of land regularization efforts were presented, including mechanisms for reviewing cases in compliance with the Prime Minister’s directives and policies set by NUCA’s central unit for land management in new cities.
The minister further addressed the progress of infrastructure works for the first phase of the city, which includes potable water, sewage systems, and road subgrade preparation. The status of water treatment plants, lift stations, and the sewage treatment plant was also reviewed.
Minister El-Sherbiny directed the team to establish a robust plan to leverage nearby development axes, such as the Abu Ghaleb Bridge on the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, to expedite urban growth. He also emphasized optimizing the use of lands near these axes and integrating the city with surrounding road networks, setting a clear timeline for implementing infrastructure projects.
This meeting underscores the ministry’s commitment to driving sustainable urbanization and addressing the pressing need for well-planned cities.
