Minister of Housing Oversees Progress on Amr Ibn Al-As Freeway in Giza

Minister of Housing, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, inspected the ongoing construction of the “Amr Ibn Al-As” freeway in Giza, which is being carried out by the Central Agency for Reconstruction through the Greater Cairo Reconstruction Authority.

The minister highlighted the significance of the Amr Ibn Al-As Freeway, the second free traffic corridor in Giza. The project aims to connect the southern and northern sections of the Ring Road, running parallel to the Kamel Amer Freeway (also executed by the Central Agency for Reconstruction), as part of a comprehensive plan to ease traffic on the Mariouteya Axis. This will improve traffic flow within Giza and enhance connections with Cairo.

Mahmoud Nassar, Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction, provided updates on the work to link Amr Ibn Al-As Freeway with the southern section of the Ring Road at Mariouteya, stressing the importance of maintaining open roads and smooth traffic flow in this highly congested area while the massive steel beams are installed over the Ring Road.

Nassar also explained that the project includes upgrading surface roads along the freeway’s route, as well as side streets, particularly in the densely populated areas of Haram, Faisal, and the Sadat Axis. The aim is to improve the aesthetics of these areas, transforming the spaces beneath the bridges into parks and parking facilities, while also providing essential services to enhance the surrounding environment. This will benefit local residents and users of the freeway in areas plagued by heavy traffic and long travel times, as well as pollution caused by vehicle emissions.

The Amr Ibn Al-As Freeway spans 4.5 km with 12 traffic lanes, and includes the construction of an elevated bridge 21.5 meters wide, featuring three lanes in each direction. The project is divided into six sections, connecting to the southern section of the Ring Road, Mariouteya Axis, and the Mansouriya and Tourist Road towards Moneeb. Additional exits connect to Haram Street, while entrances and exits serve the Mansheya, Safa, and Marwa areas of Faisal, significantly reducing travel time between Moneeb and areas such as Mansheya al-Bakari, Tawabeq, Faisal, and Haram to just 10 minutes.

Nassar further noted that while the majority of the freeway and its access points have been completed, including the connection to the southern section of the Ring Road for those coming from Maadi and Moneeb towards Haram, Faisal, and Sadat Axis, final work remains to link the freeway with the northern and southern sections of the Ring Road. This will be done in coordination with the Giza Governorate and the General Traffic Department of Giza, ensuring all necessary traffic diversions are in place before finalizing the connections, without causing any road closures or disruptions in this high-traffic area.
