Engineer Randa El-Menshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, began her inspection tour today in New Cairo City by reviewing the implementation and connection works of the main gravity sewer lines with a total capacity of 500,000 cubic meters per day, leading to the El Gabal El Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The visit comes within the framework of the state’s plan to enhance the efficiency of utility networks and infrastructure while supporting current and future urban expansion. The minister was accompanied during the tour by Engineer Ahmed Omran, deputy minister of housing for utilities; officials from the Ministry of Housing and the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA); and the head of the New Cairo City Development Authority.
The minister of housing emphasized the importance of the New Cairo main sewer gravity lines project, describing it as one of the strategic infrastructure projects aimed at improving the efficiency of the city’s wastewater system and strengthening its capacity to accommodate rapid urban and population growth.
She explained that the project will improve the efficiency of wastewater conveyance and disposal while reducing pressure on existing sewer networks and treatment facilities. This will ensure the sustainability of public services provided to residents and enhance the operational reliability of the city’s utility infrastructure.

Engineer Randa El-Menshawy received a detailed briefing on the project’s implementation progress, which includes the construction and connection of several main gravity sewer lines with different diameters to serve residential districts and urban communities throughout the city.
These include the Station (7) line with a diameter of 1,800 mm, the Station (3) line with a diameter of 800 mm, the Station (1) line with a diameter of 1,400 mm, the Banafseg Station line with a diameter of 1,400 mm, the Yasmeen and Mirage stations line with a diameter of 1,500 mm, and the main Shouifat Station line with a diameter of 1,600 mm.
The minister also reviewed the operational works, noting that the connection of the 1,600 mm main Shouifat Station line to the El Gabal El Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant has been completed and the line has entered full operational service. Approximately 46,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day are currently being pumped through the line to the treatment plant.
Engineer Ahmed Omran explained that the implementation, connection, and preparation of five main sewer lines have been fully completed, making them ready to begin operation and wastewater pumping. He added that microtunneling works are currently underway beneath the Ring Road to complete the connection of the 1,500 mm Yasmeen and Mirage stations lines, paving the way for their integration into the city’s comprehensive wastewater system.
For his part, Engineer Ahmed Rashad, Head of the New Cairo City Development Authority, affirmed that efforts to upgrade the wastewater system and improve operational efficiency will continue to address future increases in demand. These efforts will ensure the stability and sustainability of wastewater services while supporting New Cairo City’s development and urban expansion plans.
At the conclusion of the tour, Engineer Randa El-Menshawy directed officials to maintain regular monitoring of implementation progress and adhere to the approved project timeline to ensure the swift completion of the works, the project’s entry into service, and the achievement of maximum operational benefits. This comes as part of the state’s ongoing strategy to develop infrastructure and improve the quality of life in Egypt’s new cities.
