Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, held a meeting to review the progress of work in the Utilities Sector of the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA), as well as to follow up on the latest developments in several infrastructure projects and the modernization of utility systems across Egypt’s new cities.
During the meeting, the Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring the continuity of high-quality water and wastewater services, while also meeting the future needs of residents. He stressed the need to expand the installation of smart prepaid water meters in all new cities and to complete the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) network mapping and analysis system, which will create a comprehensive data platform to enhance operational efficiency.

El-Sherbiny highlighted the importance of improving citizen and investor services by providing an integrated electronic system for bill payments and contract management. He also called for standardizing operational and monitoring mechanisms across the Ministry, while expanding innovative payment solutions such as mobile payment apps in addition to existing systems like InstaPay and Fawry for mechanical meters. In the same context, the Minister stressed the importance of promptly addressing customer complaints and ensuring the resolution of all issues related to the utilities sector.
The meeting also discussed the progress of the GIS-based utility mapping system, including uploading network data and conducting the necessary hydraulic analyses to accommodate the massive urban expansions currently underway.
The Minister shed light on the future vision of the utilities sector, which focuses on strengthening partnerships with the private sector, supporting local industries, prioritizing national products, and promoting waste recycling.
Furthermore, he emphasized the need to enhance collection efficiency, reduce water loss, and rationalize water consumption, particularly in industrial activities within new cities, ensuring that water use is managed wisely and sustainably.
El-Sherbiny also reviewed the status of several seawater desalination plants currently under construction or planned for the near future, including the New Alamein Desalination Plant, the East Matrouh Plant, and a new facility south of Alamein. These projects aim to strengthen water sustainability and expand available resources for future urban development.
