Mai Abdel Hamid, CEO of the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund, participated in the International Housing Exhibition and Conference held in Nigeria from July 27 to August 1, 2025. The conference aimed to strengthen African cooperation in the housing sector and was attended by ministers of housing from several African countries. During her speech, Mai Abdel Hamid presented Egypt’s experience in providing adequate housing for low- and middle-income citizens through the “Housing for All Egyptians” program, which has delivered homes to over 650,000 citizens. The program operates under unified eligibility criteria, targeting individuals aged between 21 and 50 years.
Mai Abdel Hamid highlighted the fund’s innovations in addressing financial challenges and promoting sustainability in the housing sector. She emphasized the collaboration with the Central Bank of Egypt and the Ministry of Finance to launch mortgage initiatives with subsidized interest rates, up to 8% for low-income citizens and 12% for middle-income citizens. This cooperation has significantly eased the financial burden on these groups. Additionally, the fund enhanced financial inclusion by working with 31 banks and financing companies, leading to EGP 88 billion in mortgage financing and the integration of 65% of beneficiaries into the financial system.
She also presented the Green Affordable Housing Initiative, which aims to construct over 55,000 environmentally sustainable housing units using eco-friendly materials. To date, 25,000 units have been certified under the Green Pyramid Rating System, and the “EDGE” certification is currently being processed for 14,000 units. Abdel Hamid further underscored the fund’s success in digitizing the application process, enabling citizens to apply electronically with ease.
