Engineer Sherif El Sherbini, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, along with Governor of Alexandria, Major General Ahmed Khaled, inspected the construction of the western arc of the “Major General Omar Suleiman Axis” project, known as Alexandria’s Ring Road. The project is being executed by the Central Agency for Reconstruction, under the ministry’s supervision.
Minister El Sherbini emphasized that the new axis aims to facilitate vehicle movement to and from Borg El Arab International Airport, the North Coast, and key development zones, including industrial, logistical, and agricultural areas around Borg El Arab City. The road will directly connect these areas to the desert highway and the national road network, easing traffic flow and reducing congestion in Alexandria by diverting traffic away from the city’s urban areas.
Governor Khaled highlighted the importance of the project in alleviating pressure on existing roads and improving traffic conditions in Alexandria. He stressed the need to overcome any obstacles to ensure the project’s timely completion. The governor also directed that informative signs be placed to communicate to citizens the extensive efforts and challenges involved in this project, as well as the significant benefits it will bring to the city’s residents.
During the tour, Minister El Sherbini, Governor Khaled, and their accompanying delegation reviewed the progress of the Alexandria Ring Road. Major General Mahmoud Nassar, Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction, provided a detailed overview of the project. The road, which spans approximately 20 kilometers and includes six lanes in each direction, will feature a central median, interchanges, and other key infrastructure components. It will extend from kilometer 40 on the Alexandria-Cairo Desert Road, passing Borg El Arab International Airport, the Borg El Arab Industrial City, and the coastal international road. The project will also include three overpasses, 24 surface bridges, and an overpass above the Alexandria-Matrouh railway.
Major General Nassar added that these road projects are part of the state’s vision to elevate Alexandria’s status on the global tourism map by enhancing its road network. This will relieve pressure on older roads, improve traffic flow, and connect the city to new urban expansions east and west of Alexandria.
