Housing Ministry: Egypt Draws a New Water Map with Major Projects to Secure the Needs of Future Generations

Under the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the wise management of water resources, Egypt has implemented a comprehensive plan to rationalize water consumption and ensure sustainable water security. The Ministry of Housing has focused on this file through a multi-pillar national strategy to achieve sustainable development.

Minister of Housing Sherif El-Sherbiny affirmed that the water file has received great attention since 2014, when the state began a comprehensive plan for optimal use and the provision of alternative sources. The ministry has made a breakthrough in seawater desalination, increasing production from 84,000 cubic meters per day in 2014 to about 1.42 million cubic meters per day across 126 plants. An additional 11 plants are under implementation to raise production to 1.73 million cubic meters per day, with a long-term plan to reach 9.8 million cubic meters per day by 2050.
