Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, emphasized that providing adequate housing is a top priority for the government to accommodate the country’s growing population and enhance the quality of life for all Egyptians. His remarks came during a general session of the Senate, chaired by Counselor Abdel Wahab Abdel Razeq, as the Housing Committee’s report on amending the Unified Building Law No. 119 of 2008 was being discussed.
Housing Units for All Egyptians
The minister highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to improve living conditions by constructing new housing units and redeveloping existing areas, including informal settlements. He also pointed out the support provided to lower-income groups through the “Housing for All Egyptians” initiative, in addition to middle and upper-middle housing projects.
70,000 New Units to Be Launched
El-Sherbiny announced that the ministry has delivered 634,000 housing units since 2014, with a total investment of 110 billion EGP. He further revealed that 70,000 new units will be made available under the “Housing for All Egyptians” project within the next month.
Medium-Income Housing Projects
The minister outlined the ministry’s plans for medium-income housing, with 30,000 units scheduled for completion by December 30, 2024, as part of the Dar Misr, Janna, and Sakan Misr projects. These units will be offered through the ministry’s website and online platform, in addition to the upcoming 70,000 units.
Fourth-Generation Cities
Regarding fourth-generation cities and luxury housing, El-Sherbiny announced the ongoing development of 12,000 housing units and the marketing of an additional 50,000 units.
Land Development and Infrastructure Projects
El-Sherbiny also highlighted the ministry’s efforts to meet housing demand by offering 25,000 land plots to developers and investors. He noted the continued expansion of infrastructure projects, including roads such as the Kamal Amer and Amr Ibn Al-As corridors.
Ongoing Development of New Cities
The minister pointed out that there are currently 22 operational cities, with ongoing development, maintenance, and upgrades to improve services. Additionally, 38 fourth-generation cities, including New Alamein, the New Administrative Capital, and New Mansoura, are in various stages of development.
El-Sherbiny concluded by addressing the significant challenges facing infrastructure projects, particularly under the “Decent Life” initiative. The first phase is nearing completion, and the second phase, covering 1,500 villages, is underway, with plans to start the third phase soon.
