The Old Rent Law has witnessed extensive discussion recently following the amendments approved by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The law stipulates that the state provides alternative units for eligible tenants before the end of the evacuation deadline, whether for rent or ownership.
According to Article (8), tenants or those covered by the contract according to previous laws have the right to apply for an alternative unit, provided they vacate their current unit upon the allocation of the new one. The Council of Ministers is obligated to establish the rules for submitting applications and arranging priorities within one month from the start of the law’s implementation, while government entities present the available units and determine those eligible.

The original tenant and those covered by the contract are given priority for unit allocation before the end of the tenancy relationship period. When new units are offered, the nature of the area is taken into consideration to ensure family stability and avoid harm to social and geographical ties.
On the other hand, specific categories are deprived of benefiting from alternative units, such as those with the financial capacity to purchase properties or those who already own private units, according to statements by MP Mohamed Attia El-Fayoumi, Head of the Housing Committee in the House of Representatives.
