Dr. Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, led the inaugural meeting of the newly formed High Coordination Committee tasked with establishing the institutional framework for Egypt’s water and wastewater codes. This initiative, aligning with national strategies for sustainable infrastructure, aims to update and enhance the standards for water and sanitation services.
Present at the meeting were Dr. Mohamed Massoud, Chair of the National Housing and Building Research Center (HBRC), former Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation Dr. Abdelkawi Khalifa, and Dr. Mohamed Hassan, Head of the Regulatory Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation Services and Consumer Protection, along with academic experts and researchers. Dr. Ismail emphasized the need for collaboration across sectors to issue a legislative code that addresses Egypt’s current challenges in water infrastructure. The updated codes will ensure the efficient use of resources and the sustainability of water facilities.
Dr. Massoud underlined the significance of integrating advanced technologies to meet the nation’s sustainable development goals, while Dr. Khalifa noted the importance of updating existing codes to address application challenges and improve system efficiency. The committee will convene periodically to oversee code updates, aiming to implement international best practices while fostering a new generation of experts in Egypt’s water sector.
This committee was established by Ministerial Decree No. 10 of 2024 and comprises leading experts in infrastructure and engineering, with the goal of advancing Egypt’s water and sanitation standards to meet future demands and provide high-quality services for all citizens.
