Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed that Egypt will not remain silent in the face of Ethiopia’s irresponsible approach, emphasizing Cairo’s determination to protect its interests and water security.
In his speech during the opening of Cairo Water Week, El-Sisi explained that Egypt chose the path of diplomacy and resorted to international institutions, stressing that this approach reflects the strength of its position and a belief in dialogue and cooperation to achieve mutual interests for Nile Basin countries without threatening any party.

El-Sisi underscored Egypt’s firm rejection of any unilateral actions on the Nile River that violate international agreements and destabilize the peoples of the basin. He added that the recent developments following the operation of the dam confirm the necessity of having a legally binding agreement to regulate its operations.
He pointed out that Ethiopia has harmed the two downstream countries due to irregular management that led to random water discharge without coordination. He called on the international community, especially Africa, to ensure that water release is regulated in a way that balances development interests for upstream countries without harming the two downstream nations.
