Engineer Sherif El-Sharbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, participated in the eighth edition of Cairo Water Week, held under the theme “Innovative Solutions for Enhancing Climate Adaptation and Water Resources Sustainability.” This major event is organized under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and supervised by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, in cooperation with regional and international organization partners.
During the third day of the event, Engineer Sherif El-Sharbiny delivered a speech in a session titled “The Dream of Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Egypt Has Become a Reality.” The session was attended by a number of officials and development partners.
The minister expressed his pride in being part of the national efforts to implement the Climate Change Adaptation Enhancement Project in the Nile Delta and the Northern Coast. He stressed that this project reflects Egypt’s ambitious vision, under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to place people, the environment, and sustainable development at the forefront of national priorities.

El-Sharbiny pointed to the importance of Cairo Water Week in highlighting water challenges as an existential issue. He also noted that the President’s opening address served as a guiding framework for Egypt’s direction toward enhancing international cooperation and innovation to ensure water sustainability and transform it into a bridge for development rather than competition.
In his remarks, the minister discussed the impact of climate change, which has become one of the most pressing global issues, and emphasized that Egypt was among the first countries to handle this issue with awareness and responsibility. This was reflected through several major projects and initiatives, most notably the Climate Change Adaptation Project, which aims to protect land and communities through innovative and sustainable solutions.
The minister affirmed that the Ministry of Housing understands the dimensions of the climate issue as not only an environmental matter but one that is directly linked to the economy and human development. To address these challenges, the ministry is working in coordination with other ministries and coastal governorates overlooking the Mediterranean to develop and implement integrated plans for coastal zone management. He referred to Damietta Governorate as a pioneering model of how state efforts can be integrated in developing local communities and protecting the coastal environment.
He also explained that the ministry has focused on developing new cities such as New Alamein, New Mansoura, and New Damietta according to design standards that ensure protection against rising sea levels. He announced local and international partnerships to develop water and sewage networks to cope with the effects of climate change.
The minister concluded his speech by affirming Egypt’s ability to confront climate challenges and transform them into development opportunities, highlighting the integration and cooperation among institutions to build safe and sustainable communities that align with the changes and requirements of the modern era.
