Egyptian Minister of Housing Urges Immediate Action to Improve Port Said’s Water and Sanitation System

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, held a high-level meeting to address pressing issues in Port Said’s water and sanitation system. The meeting included representatives from the Drinking Water and Sanitation Regulatory Authority, the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, the Canal Governorates Water and Sanitation Company, and Ministry officials.

The Minister emphasized that the meeting was a direct response to instructions from Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, following complaints received during his recent visit to Port Said. El-Sherbiny reviewed a detailed report on the status of wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations across the governorate, as well as the ongoing maintenance efforts for several facilities.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of the infrastructure, El-Sherbiny described the situation as “unacceptable,” highlighting the significant impact of system failures on residents. He called for an immediate action plan to address the issues, including repairing malfunctioning pumps, enhancing station efficiency, and ensuring rapid improvements to prevent further deterioration.

The Minister also directed the preparation of a comprehensive plan to upgrade the entire water and sanitation system across the governorate. This plan must include clear timelines for ongoing maintenance and regular on-site monitoring. He scheduled a follow-up meeting in two weeks to review the progress on the discussed measures and evaluate the implementation of proposed solutions.

This proactive approach underscores the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring sustainable water and sanitation services and improving the quality of life for residents in Port Said.
