Egypt to Host the 12th World Urban Forum in November

Egypt is set to host the 12th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) in collaboration with UN-Habitat this November. This event is recognized as the second-largest on the United Nations’ international agenda, following the UN Climate Change Conference (COP). With this hosting, Egypt becomes the second African nation, after Nairobi, Kenya—where the inaugural forum was held—and the second country in the Middle East, after Abu Dhabi, which hosted the tenth edition.

A Significant Global Event

Dr. Abdel Khalek Ibrahim, Assistant Minister of Housing for Technical Affairs, emphasized that the World Urban Forum is among the most important global events focused on environmental and urban issues. He noted that it differs from the COP conference due to the participation of a larger number of civil society organizations, governmental bodies, and the private sector, allowing for a more specialized discussion on urban issues.

Egypt’s bid to host the forum was made alongside six other countries, including China. The Egyptian government was keen to secure the forum for Cairo, given the city’s rich architectural diversity and heritage, along with various urban development projects. The event will also feature cultural, touristic, and entertainment activities that align with Cairo’s historical and civilizational attributes.

Cairo Chosen for Its Urban Diversity

Dr. Ibrahim highlighted that Cairo’s urban diversity was a key factor in its selection over Sharm El Sheikh. The forum will showcase several major projects executed by both the government and the private sector.

The forum is expected to include around 31 main sessions, with Egypt participating in all of them. Additionally, there will be two special sessions dedicated to showcasing the Egyptian experience and highlighting significant projects that focus on enhancing the quality of life for citizens. These projects prioritize human needs rather than merely constructing cities, housing, and services.

Roundtable Discussions and International Collaboration

A roundtable discussion involving all African ministers will take place alongside the forum, where Egypt will present its experience and explore avenues for cooperation.

Established in 2001 by the United Nations, the World Urban Forum is the first global conference dedicated to sustainable urbanization, designed to study the effects of rapid urbanization on cities, communities, economies, and climate change. Since its inception, cities worldwide have hosted the forum, with the first edition held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2002.
