Minister Holds Meeting to Review Progress on Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project in Tanzania

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny held a meeting today to assess the progress of the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam and Station project, which is being implemented by the Egyptian consortium of “Arab Contractors” and “Elsewedy Electric.” The project is located on the Rufiji River in Tanzania. Engineer Ahmed El-Assar, Chairman of Arab Contractors; Engineer Ahmed Elsewedy, CEO of Elsewedy Electric; Engineer Wael Hamdy, Vice President of Elsewedy Electric; and Central Agency for Reconstruction officials attended the meeting.

Minister El-Sherbiny emphasized that Egypt places significant importance on this major project, symbolizing the strong relationship between Egypt and Tanzania. He highlighted the capabilities of Egyptian companies in executing large-scale projects, particularly in African countries. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi regularly monitors the project to ensure it contributes to Tanzania’s development, provides essential electricity, controls Rufiji River floods, and preserves the environment.

During the meeting, the minister reviewed the project components, including a 1,025-meter dam with a 32.8 billion cubic meters reservoir capacity. The hydropower station, with a capacity of 2,115 megawatts, is located on the Rufiji River within a natural reserve in the Morogoro region, southwest of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania’s commercial capital). Other project components were also discussed in detail.

The minister directed the documentation of all achievements in this monumental project through booklets and visual records to preserve the consortium’s accomplishments. The representatives of the two companies confirmed that the project stages and components are being thoroughly documented.

The minister also stressed the importance of presenting this remarkable experience at international forums, particularly in African countries, such as the upcoming energy conference in Tanzania. This will further showcase the capabilities of Egyptian companies in executing large-scale projects and open new opportunities for them.
