Housing Minister Follows Up on the Construction of the Western Arc of Omar Suleiman Axis in Alexandria

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbini, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, inspected the progress of the construction of the western arc of the Major General Omar Suleiman Axis in the Borg El Arab area of Alexandria Governorate. This vital infrastructure project extends for 21 kilometers and includes various structural works designed to ease vehicle movement of all types to and from Borg El Arab International Airport, the North Coast, development zones, and the Cairo/Alexandria Desert Road.

The Minister affirmed that the project is part of a comprehensive plan to establish a main road network within Alexandria Governorate. It aligns with the Ministry’s ongoing efforts, executed through its different agencies and authorities, to complete various development projects—especially those related to roads and infrastructure—under the supervision of the Central Agency for Reconstruction.

In the same context, Major General Eng. Mahmoud Nassar, Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction, and Major General Eng. Tarek Kamal Mowafi, Head of the Executive Agency for Reconstruction Projects in the Central North Coast, inspected the project’s work progress. Accompanying them were the project’s general consultant, project officials from the agency, implementing companies, and relevant consultancy offices.

Major General Mahmoud Nassar emphasized that the western arc of the Omar Suleiman Axis aims to facilitate vehicle traffic between Borg El Arab International Airport, the North Coast, and development zones in and around Borg El Arab City. The project ensures direct linkage with the Alexandria/Cairo Desert Road and the regional road network. It also connects the desert road to the airport and the international coastal highway, significantly contributing to reducing traffic congestion in Alexandria and accommodating the traffic headed to the North Coast without passing through the city center.

The project consists of a dual carriageway spanning 21 kilometers with six lanes in each direction, in addition to a central median and road shoulders. The road starts from kilometer mark 40 and extends to the international coastal highway, passing through the airport and the industrial city. The project includes the construction of four flyovers, two bridges over the high-speed train, and five surface bridges over canals and drains. It also involves covering the Palestine Drain for a length of 2.3 kilometers. The construction work has been divided into three sectors, each assigned to national companies to accelerate completion.
