Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, announced that investments in water and wastewater projects over the past decade have reached EGP 750 billion. Speaking on the “Evening DMC” program, the minister emphasized the critical role of the “Decent Life” initiative (Hayah Karima) in improving access to water and sanitation services in villages across Egypt. Water coverage increased from 93.5% in 2014 to 99% currently, while sanitation coverage rose significantly from just 12% to 65%.
The minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to regulate the real estate market, particularly through the establishment of The Egyptian Real Estate Platform, along with the creation of independent bodies dedicated to organizing the market and supporting property export.
The Ministry of Housing announced that the real estate market regulation platforms are set to officially begin operation in 2026, with a strong emphasis on property export as a means to boost the state’s foreign currency reserves. Minister El-Sherbiny stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between locally marketed housing units and those intended for export, aiming to offer diverse residential options to both Egyptians at home and abroad.
He noted the strong demand for the “Beit El Watan” (Home of the Nation) units and mentioned special initiatives being introduced for Egyptians living overseas. On the topic of the old rent law, the minister assured that the government is taking social considerations into account and is not seeking to evict tenants. Instead, alternative solutions are being pursued, such as mutual agreements between landlords and tenants or the provision of alternative housing options by the government.
