Al-Wa’i Party Rejects the Draft Law and Proposes a Housing Project to Provide 800,000 Units

Al-Wa’i Party held a discussion seminar entitled “Rental Justice Between Fairness and Harm: Debates on the Old Rent Law Draft”, with the participation of several politicians including MPs and members of the Senate, in addition to representatives from some political parties, lawyers, economists, sociology professors, and experts in real estate and urban affairs.

According to the party’s statement, the seminar reviewed the history of exceptional rental laws in Egypt from 1922 until the present, highlighting the developments of these laws leading up to the current government proposal to amend Law No. 49 of 1977.

The seminar concluded with a set of recommendations that emphasized the necessity of making fundamental amendments to the submitted draft and rejecting it in its current form due to the imbalance it causes in the rental relationship between landlords and tenants, without harming either party.

The Housing and Urban Development Committee of Al-Wa’i Party proposed the establishment of a Housing Justice Fund to provide more than 800,000 housing units within three years without imposing financial burdens on the state. The fund would rely on unconventional financing and partnerships with the private sector and civil society to address the housing crisis and solve the old rent problem. The legal committee will also draft proposals from the discussion session to submit to the House of Representatives. The party stressed the importance of social dialogue in formulating laws related to citizens’ rights to enhance social cohesion.
