Mai Abdel Hamid, CEO of the Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Support Fund, stated that the fund has not received any directives regarding the provision of alternative housing for tenants under the old rent system.
This came in response to a question by TV presenter Lamis El Hadidi during her show Kalema Akheera on ON channel, where she asked:
“The old rent law is currently being discussed in Parliament. Will the government provide alternative housing units for tenants as a priority after a five-year transitional period if the draft law is passed? And are such units available through the fund or any other entity?”
She added: Discussions are still ongoing, and over the past years, the fund has managed to provide 730,000 housing units, enabling 650,000 families to move in and reside in them. However, regarding the old rent issue, it requires a census of the number of tenants and setting their priorities.
Mai Abdel Hamid clarified that no assignments have been received concerning the old rent file, but the matter requires conducting thorough studies on the numbers involved and their priorities, as well as evaluating the areas that might be affected by evacuations. She emphasized the importance of collecting accurate data to determine how the fund could contribute to this file. She also noted that the state has fair solutions for both landlords and tenants, indicating that there is a plan and dedicated funding in place.
