CAPMAS Advisor Reveals Statistics on Residential Units, Sizes, and Households under Old Rent Law

Abdel Hamid Sharaf El-Din, Advisor to the President of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), stated that the number of residential units rented under the old rent system amounts to 3,019,662 units out of a total of 42,973,884 units, according to the most recent statistics collected in 2017.

Sharaf El-Din added, during a phone interview with TV host Sayed Ali on the program “Hazrat Al-Muwatin” aired on Al-Hadath Al-Youm channel, that these units represent 7% of the total residential units, while the remaining units are distributed among new rent contracts, furnished rentals, and owned properties.

Sharaf El-Din pointed out that the number of households benefiting from the old rent system reaches 1,642,870 families, reflecting approximately 6 million individuals. Most of them are concentrated in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, and Qalyubia, which together account for 82% of the total households under this system.

He explained that 93% of these families reside in urban areas, while the remaining percentage lives in rural regions. He also noted that around 36% of these households pay less than 50 EGP in monthly rent, while 20% pay between 50 and 100 EGP.

Sharaf El-Din clarified that 18.7% of tenants pay between 100 and 200 EGP, 10% pay between 200 and 300 EGP, and less than 0.1% pay over 900 EGP in rent. He further indicated that 29,300 families (1.8%) live in a one-room apartment, 8.7% in two-room apartments, 54% in three-room units, 31% in four-room units, 3.8% in five-room units, and less than 0.6% in apartments with six or more rooms.

He also revealed that 138,000 housing units were built before 1944, 229,000 units were constructed between 1944 and before 1960, about 537,000 units were built between 1960 and 1970, and 715,000 units were built between 1970 and 1980.
