Are Historic Buildings in Downtown Cairo Being Demolished?

The Media Center of the Egyptian Cabinet has addressed recent claims regarding the government’s alleged intention to demolish historic buildings and commercial shops in Downtown Cairo as part of a redevelopment plan for the area.

The center firmly stated that there are no plans to remove historic buildings or commercial shops. It confirmed that the redevelopment of the area will follow a vision that preserves its architectural character and cultural heritage without altering existing structures or impacting business operations.

It also highlighted that urban and planning studies had previously been conducted to ensure the optimal utilization of the Downtown area, and these studies will serve as the foundation for the redevelopment process.

An Attractive Tourist Destination

The statement explained that the goal of the redevelopment is to make the area more appealing to tourists, in line with successful development models adopted in several European countries that have preserved the heritage character of their historic districts during modernization efforts.

Additionally, it noted that the government is currently gathering ideas and input from various experts to ensure the best possible use of the “Ministries Complex” and Downtown Cairo, while maintaining their unique cultural and architectural value.

The Cabinet urged citizens to be cautious when sharing information and emphasized the importance of relying on official sources.
