Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, delivered a comprehensive presentation on Egypt’s urban development experience at the ministerial session for African housing ministers. The session was attended by Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UN-Habitat Executive Director Ana Claudia Rossbach, along with several ministers, officials, and real estate developers.
Minister El-Sherbiny highlighted the challenges of Egypt’s urban development, including rapid population growth and the concentration of residents within a limited geographical area. He noted that the state aims to expand the inhabited area of Egypt from 7% to 14%, with a further target of reaching approximately 17.5-18% in the coming years.
In alignment with Egypt’s Vision 2030, the strategy seeks comprehensive and balanced sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The Minister detailed the state’s efforts in enhancing life quality by developing unsafe areas, providing replacement housing, and supporting alternative residential options to ensure affordable housing for all Egyptians.
He also emphasized Egypt’s efforts in smart city planning through the development of fourth-generation cities like the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein City, while revitalizing existing urban environments.
