Housing Minister Commits to 400,000 New Housing Units Annually to Meet Population Growth

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, has announced a government commitment to providing 400,000 housing units annually to keep pace with the country’s population growth. Emphasizing the Ministry’s dedication to diversity in housing options, El-Sherbiny highlighted the need to address varying demands across income levels and regions.

In a recent statement to the Senate Housing Committee, chaired by MP Khaled Saeed, El-Sherbiny noted the Ministry’s determination to overcome existing challenges and implement a forward-thinking strategy aimed at maximizing financial resources. “We are committed to ensuring adequate housing for all Egyptians, pricing many units at approximately 60% below cost to make them accessible,” El-Sherbiny said, reaffirming the Ministry’s focus on delivering high-quality housing services nationwide.

Achieving Large-Scale National Projects

Committee Chairman Khaled Saeed commended the Ministry’s achievements, pointing to major national projects over the past decade. “In 2014, our goal was to expand the inhabited area and develop existing communities,” Saeed noted. “Today, the inhabited area has grown to 13.6% of Egypt’s total land, demonstrating the Ministry’s ongoing efforts.”

Saeed also underscored the role of the Ministry in infrastructure advancements. Egypt now has 4,676 villages with sanitation services, and the nationwide initiative “Hayah Karima” (Decent Life) aims to achieve 100% sanitation coverage across all villages. Additionally, Saeed affirmed that there are no unsafe zones left in the country, marking significant progress toward safer, more sustainable urban development.
