Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, emphasized the need for regular monitoring of the operation and maintenance of internal and external transport systems in new cities to ensure high-quality service for residents.
During a meeting on Monday, attended by Engineer Amin Ghoneim, Vice President of the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA), and representatives from Mwasalat Misr (Egypt Transportation), the minister reviewed the status of the transport system’s operation and discussed challenges and improvement suggestions.
El-Sherbiny highlighted the government’s strong commitment, through NUCA and city authorities, to providing reliable and efficient public transport systems, both within and between new cities. He stressed the importance of changing public perceptions toward mass transit and encouraging its use, aiming to offer residents of new cities a higher standard of living while speeding up urban development and increasing population attraction.
Officials from Mwasalat Misr presented the current status and operational challenges of the system, as well as proposals for performance improvement.
NUCA has established a specialized unit to oversee the planning of smart urban mass transport systems within new cities and their connections to surrounding cities through public transport hubs. The unit is responsible for drafting contracts with investors and operators to create, manage, and maintain these systems. It also supervises the performance of smart transport systems, sets standards for evaluating operational efficiency, and enforces penalties, incentives, and rewards based on performance.
Additionally, the authority works on securing equipment through grants and investments to monitor and manage the transport systems, while hiring and training qualified personnel to handle the administration and operation of these systems.
