Engineer Sherif El-Sherbini, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, led an inspection visit with officials from the ministry, the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, and the New Urban Communities Authority to the headquarters of the Spanish company “Acciona” in Madrid, following an invitation from the company.
Acciona is recognized as a global leader in providing advanced solutions for eco-friendly infrastructure and clean energy and plays a pivotal role in driving the transition toward a low-carbon global economy. This visit comes within national efforts to strengthen international partnerships that support the country’s development plans.
The goal of the visit was to support private-sector companies interested in contributing to the Ministry of Housing’s major projects, particularly in the fields of housing, drinking water facilities, and wastewater services, in line with the State Ownership Policy Document.
This step also aligns with the state’s ambition to localize industry and stimulate local production of electromechanical equipment, with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency in vital sectors and strengthening national manufacturing capabilities. Such efforts will enhance competitiveness and open new marketing channels for Egyptian products in Africa and the Gulf region.

The Board of Directors of Acciona Group welcomed the Egyptian delegation and expressed its desire to expand cooperation with Egypt and deepen the partnership through knowledge transfer and participation in the development of ongoing and future projects—particularly in the fields of seawater desalination and wastewater treatment using renewable energy sources. This collaboration supports Egypt’s vision to build modern, sustainable infrastructure that reinforces its regional position in this sector.
The minister explained that his visit to the Spanish corporation aimed to benefit from its extensive experience and discuss its investment plans in Egypt. He praised Acciona’s achievements through its exchange of expertise with the various sectors of the Ministry of Housing, stressing that such cooperation aligns with the state’s vision for developing the utilities sector according to the highest global standards. He also highlighted that improving management and operational systems will positively reflect on the quality of services provided to citizens and support the path toward a technologically advanced economy.
El-Sherbini emphasized the importance of establishing partnerships to expand seawater desalination projects, pointing to the national desalination strategy extending to the year 2050, which aims to secure water security and manage water resources sustainably for future generations while protecting the economy from global fluctuations.
It is noteworthy that Acciona Group is currently participating in major projects in the Arab region, including the “Casablanca Desalination Plant” in Morocco with a capacity of 840,000 cubic meters per day, and the management and operation of the “Taweelah Plant” in the UAE with a capacity of 900,000 cubic meters per day.
El-Sherbini also stressed the need to enhance oversight and supervision in the drinking water and wastewater sector by establishing an advanced central monitoring and control center that connects all stations using modern technologies.
He pointed to the importance of training technical personnel and exchanging knowledge to transfer international expertise and technologies, emphasizing that the development of human capabilities is a fundamental pillar for implementing the state’s comprehensive development vision.
