The long-awaited reopening of Azbakeya Garden in Downtown Cairo is now imminent following an extensive renovation project led by the Ministry of Housing, in collaboration with the Cairo Governorate.
The upgrades also included the Azbakeya Book Market area located along the historic Azbakeya Wall in Al-Attaba, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to revive the distinctive heritage landmarks of Khedivial Cairo, renew the area’s cultural spirit, and enhance its touristic appeal. These initiatives aim to reposition the district as a unique destination that seamlessly blends tourism, culture, and history.
The renovation project seeks to restore the splendor and beauty of Azbakeya Garden while preserving its cultural and historical legacy. The work also focused on conserving the park’s rare and ancient trees.

Spanning an area of approximately 45,000 square meters, the project includes several key structures: an administrative building, a firefighting water tank, a power transformer building, toilet cabins, a cafeteria and restaurant, a Roman-style theater, and a central lake covering 1,200 square meters adorned with a historic fountain that has been newly restored. Additionally, the garden now features pergolas and elevated viewing areas for visitors’ enjoyment.
Azbakeya Garden is considered one of Cairo’s oldest and most iconic public gardens, serving as the only major green space within the Khedivial Cairo master plan. The project, jointly implemented by the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities and the Cairo Governorate, aims to revive the garden as a vibrant recreational space for the city’s residents.
It is part of a broader initiative to revitalize Historic Cairo, highlighting the architectural and heritage value of its surrounding buildings. The development also extends to the outer perimeter of the garden, which includes Opera Square and Garage, the Theater Complex, Attaba Garage, and Attaba Square, ensuring a cohesive urban renewal of the entire district.
