Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan discussed on Wednesday ways to enhance cooperation between Egypt and Sudan, in addition to reviewing developments in the Sudanese crisis.
The talks took place during a bilateral meeting at Al-Ittihadiya Palace in Cairo. The official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency stated that President El-Sisi welcomed Al-Burhan’s visit, praising the fraternal and historic relations between the two countries, as well as their ongoing cooperation across various fields.
Presidential spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy clarified that the discussion covered the latest developments of the situation on the ground in Sudan, as well as international and regional efforts made to end the conflict and establish peace.
President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, stressing Cairo’s rejection of any attempts to destabilize Sudan’s security and stability or to form parallel entities to the legitimate government.
For his part, Al-Burhan expressed his gratitude to Egypt and President El-Sisi for their continued support, valuing the close relationship between the two peoples. He highlighted the importance of Egypt’s role in helping Sudan overcome its current challenges and restore stability.
The two leaders also discussed the importance of the Quartet Mechanism in resolving the Sudanese crisis and halting the war. They expressed hope that the upcoming meeting, scheduled to be held under this mechanism in Washington later in October, would yield tangible results in achieving peace.
Regarding the Nile waters issue, both sides reaffirmed their rejection of any unilateral measures related to the Blue Nile that could undermine international laws. Al-Burhan confirmed the alignment of positions between the two countries and their shared vision regarding the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to activate mechanisms for consultation and joint coordination between the two countries to protect their water rights.
Al-Burhan arrived in Cairo on Wednesday, accompanied by Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem and General Intelligence Director Ahmed Ibrahim Mufadel, on an official visit of unspecified duration.
It is noteworthy that Sudan has been witnessing an armed conflict since mid-April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, with regional and international mediation efforts failing so far to end the crisis.
