Dr. Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, inaugurated a workshop titled “Preparatory Technical Assistance Project for Sludge Management in Egypt”, implemented in cooperation with the European Investment Bank and with the participation of several international development partners. This comes within the framework of the Egyptian state’s awareness of the growing environmental and climate challenges, particularly those related to wastewater management and its byproducts.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Sayed Ismail welcomed the attendees and praised the fruitful and sustainable cooperation between the concerned ministries and authorities in addressing issues related to the drinking water and wastewater sector, with a specific focus on sludge management in Egypt.
He also highlighted the most prominent achievements and efforts made to develop the sector, including the massive expansion in providing water and wastewater services nationwide—especially in rural areas, where service coverage increased from just 12% in 2014 to more than 60% by 2025.

He further pointed out the increase in the number of treatment plants, which has reached a total of 602 secondary and tertiary treatment facilities with a combined capacity of 18.9 million cubic meters per day, noting that from 2014 to date, around 5,200 projects in the water and wastewater sector have been implemented or are underway, with investments exceeding EGP 725 billion.
The Deputy Minister explained in his speech that the expansion of wastewater services is both a significant achievement and a major challenge as it leads to an increase in the volume of generated sludge. This makes managing this file one of the sector’s and the state’s urgent priorities. The workshop saw the participation of a distinguished group of experts in Egypt’s water and wastewater sector, along with representatives of the institutions operating in the field.
The workshop was also attended by representatives of many international development partners, including the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the German Development Bank (KfW), the African Development Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union, and the Italian Fund for Deposits and Loans.
