Dr. Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, inaugurated a workshop titled “Preparatory Technical Support Project for Sludge Management in Egypt”, implemented in cooperation with the European Investment Bank, with the participation of a large number of international development partners. This step comes in response to the Egyptian state’s awareness of the growing environmental and climate challenges, particularly those related to wastewater management and the waste generated from it.
During his opening remarks, Dr. Sayed Ismail welcomed the participants and praised the constructive and ongoing coordination between the relevant authorities in addressing issues related to the drinking water and wastewater sector. He also highlighted the current discussions surrounding sludge management in Egypt.
The Deputy Minister outlined the significant achievements made in the field of drinking water and wastewater services, led by the extensive expansion in service coverage across the country, especially in rural areas. He noted that wastewater service coverage increased from 12% in 2014 to a projected 60% or more by 2025.

He also pointed out the remarkable development in treatment plant infrastructure, where the number of secondary and tertiary treatment plants has so far reached 602 facilities with a total capacity of 18.9 million cubic meters per day. He further reviewed the scale of investments, which exceeded EGP 725 billion, through the implementation of nearly 5,200 water and wastewater projects since 2014 to date.
Dr. Sayed Ismail emphasized that the expansion of wastewater services represents a major achievement, but it also introduces new challenges, most notably the significant increase in sludge production. Therefore, sludge management has become a top priority for the Egyptian state and the water sector.
The workshop witnessed the participation of a distinguished group of water and sanitation sector experts in Egypt, along with representatives from the relevant authorities. Representatives from development partners were also present, including the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the German Development Bank (KfW), the African Development Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union, and the Italian Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
