Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, reviewed the activities of the Central Unit for Sustainable Cities under the New Urban Communities Authority after its restructuring to align with Egypt’s national strategy aimed at reinforcing sustainability concepts and addressing climate change, in support of Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the National Green Urbanization Strategy.
This move comes in response to the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, which emphasize the importance of preserving the state’s resources through healthy environmental management in the construction sector, based on the efficient use of resources and energy. These efforts are expected to contribute to improving citizens’ economic conditions, meeting their aspirations, and enhancing their quality of life and future.

The Minister of Housing directed the activation of the central unit’s primary role and stressed the importance of providing all necessary means of support to enable its members to perform their duties effectively. He also highlighted the importance of supplying the required information to achieve the greater goal of establishing new cities characterized by sustainability.
As part of ongoing efforts, the unit’s officials held a meeting attended by several key figures, including Dr. Hend Farouh, Head of the Central Unit for Sustainable Cities and Director of the Architecture Institute at the Housing and Building National Research Center; Engineer Khaled Sorour, Assistant Vice Chairman of the New Urban Communities Authority for Development and Construction Sector and Executive Director of the Unit; Dr. Donia Rabie, the Unit’s Rapporteur; along with members of the sub-units affiliated with city authorities.
The unit will serve as a coordinating hub between different city authorities to achieve integration in implementing environmental policies and green building standards. Its main areas of work include improving energy efficiency and utilizing renewable energy, water treatment and recycling, waste management and recycling operations, promoting sustainable transport and active mobility, in addition to adopting green architecture concepts.
The next phase of efforts will focus on strengthening coordination to ensure the swift implementation of sustainable projects and closely monitoring field performance to address emerging challenges. Priority will also be given to building the capacities of technical and administrative staff necessary to lead the transition toward more sustainable cities.
