Cairo Governor Inspects Azbakeya Garden in Downtown Ahead of Its Opening

Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, conducted an inspection tour to review the final preparations for the development works being carried out by the Ministry of Housing in Azbakeya Garden and the Libraries Area in preparation for their upcoming opening. This project comes as part of efforts to restore the historic charm of Khedivial Cairo, while also enhancing the cultural and tourism aspects of the area and redesigning it to become a cultural and tourist hub.

He was accompanied during the tour by Major General Ibrahim Abdelhady, Deputy Governor for the Western District, Dr. Abdel Khaleq Ibrahim, Assistant to the Minister of Housing, and Dr. Maher Estino, the project’s technical advisor, along with several leaders from the governorate, the Ministry of Housing, and Arab Contractors Company.

The Governor of Cairo stressed the importance of concerted efforts by the executive authorities in the governorate to support the project and ensure its completion according to the set timeline.

The Azbakeya Garden development project aims to restore the beauty of the site and emphasize its historical and cultural identity. The project includes the preservation of rare and heritage trees within the 45,000-square-meter garden and encompasses a variety of facilities such as an administrative building, a fire water tank, electricity transformers, toilet cabins, a cafeteria and restaurant, a Roman theater, and a 1,200-square-meter lake featuring a restored historic fountain at its center. Additionally, pergolas and a landscaped hill have been incorporated.

Azbakeya Garden is considered one of the oldest gardens in Cairo and the only green space within the master plan of Khedivial Cairo. The redevelopment is overseen by the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities in cooperation with the Cairo Governorate with the goal of reviving it as a recreational destination for the city’s residents. The development also includes the restoration of the garden’s historic buildings and the recovery of its heritage value, along with upgrades to the surrounding areas such as Opera Square, the Opera Garage, the Theater Complex, Ataba Garage, and Ataba Square to improve the overall appearance and strengthen the cultural significance of the district.
