Engineer Ayman Yehia, a member of the Technical Support Committee at the Ministry of Housing, explained that the Azbakeya Wall development project focused on preserving the cultural and historical character of the Azbakeya Book Market, which has long been a destination for intellectuals and book lovers. He emphasized that safeguarding the market’s cultural heritage was central to the design and layout of the kiosks, ensuring their protection against removal or damage.
He pointed out that the kiosk designs were selected to reflect the Khedivial era to which the area belongs. The deliberate use of wood in the design was chosen to highlight the architectural style of Khedivial Cairo, while interior insulation was added to reduce heat impact—enhancing the practical experience for both vendors and visitors.

Yehia also revealed that the project’s final design was the result of a competition involving university students, where innovative ideas were developed to combine the spirit of the past with the needs of the present. Kiosk owners themselves were engaged in discussions to ensure that the final design met everyone’s requirements, striking a balance between historical value and functionality.
Regarding the implementation steps, he noted that the project involved cooperation with multiple entities to regularly review and refine the designs, ensuring suitable engineering solutions. The designs were also presented to beneficiaries to reach a kiosk model that would satisfy all parties—practical for display, comfortable for both sellers and visitors, and protected against fire risks.
He clarified that the project’s ultimate goal is to create a modern cultural hub in the heart of Cairo, bringing together the redeveloped Azbakeya Book Market, Azbakeya Garden, and the surrounding theaters in harmony—delivering a holistic cultural experience.
As for ensuring sustainability, Yehia confirmed that the market is equipped with advanced safety systems such as fire-resistant coatings, extinguishing equipment, a water pumping system, independent electrical panels for each kiosk, surveillance cameras, as well as wide emergency-ready passageways. All these details were carefully integrated to guarantee safety and provide comfort for both visitors and vendors alike.
