Prime Minister Inspects the Revival Works of Haret Al-Roum and Bab Zuweila and Tours Al-Khayameya

In an inspection tour covering one of Cairo’s most prominent heritage areas, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly visited the Bab Zuweila and Haret Al-Roum district to follow up on the revival works of historical and commercial buildings in the area. He was accompanied by Eng. Khaled Seddiq, Chairman of the Urban Development Fund, who provided a detailed briefing on the progress of the project.

Seddiq explained that the initiative aims to restore life to the heart of Historic Cairo while preserving its unique urban fabric that dates back centuries. The area includes major landmarks such as the Sultan Al-Muayyad Mosque, Sabil Mohamed Ali, and the famous Al-Khayameya district.

For his part, Eng. Mostafa Abdel-Wahab, Deputy Chairman of the Urban Development Fund, noted that significant development work has already been completed. This includes upgrading 30 buildings, composed of 27 residential structures, two commercial complexes, and an Azhar-affiliated institute.

Full restoration and structural reinforcement have also been completed for five heritage buildings. He emphasized that the entire district is undergoing a systematic revival effort to preserve its character, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Meanwhile, Eng. Abdelbaset Maher, Director of the Technical Office at the Fund, revealed that four new residential buildings have been constructed to replace severely deteriorated structures, with careful adherence to the area’s historic architectural style. Work is currently underway to enhance the facades and rooftops of an additional 54 buildings as part of the ongoing phase.

Alongside the official visit, the Prime Minister was keen to tour the Al-Khayameya area and speak with artisanal shop owners. He listened to their ideas, inquired about their production methods and marketing strategies, and assured them that the government plans to support them by offering suitable promotional platforms, including dedicated handicraft exhibitions. He also noted that Al-Fustat Park, scheduled to open soon, will include a special section for showcasing traditional products.

As part of inspecting practical outcomes of the project, Dr. Madbouly visited one of the houses restored under the revival plan. He expressed admiration for the building and its view overlooking Al-Khayameya, adding that leasing these units to foreign tourists could generate significant demand and draw greater attention to the area’s unique architectural heritage.
