President El-Sisi Reviews Performance Indicators of the Universal Health Insurance System

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar to discuss a number of vital files related to the healthcare sector.

The official spokesperson for the Presidency stated that during the meeting, the President reviewed the performance of the Universal Health Insurance System, focusing on the implementation of the second phase of the project, which includes the governorates of Kafr El-Sheikh, Matrouh, North Sinai, Damietta, and Minya. The President directed the swift integration of these governorates into the system according to the set timelines and pointed to the importance of studying the inclusion of Alexandria in the upcoming phase. He emphasized the need to strengthen the role of the private sector and civil society in supporting the system nationwide.

During the meeting, the President also addressed the progress of medical infrastructure projects, stressing the need to accelerate the implementation of the Nile Medical City and the Nile Specialized Children’s Hospital currently under construction at Nasser Institute. He gave directives to closely monitor the progress of the National Project for Central Laboratories in Badr City and the Medical Capital City project, which is under the General Authority for Hospitals and Educational Institutes and includes 4,200 beds and 18 specialized medical institutes. In addition, the President instructed the swift finalization of the draft law regulating the operation of private medical facilities, in the context of supporting medical investment and enhancing integration with the Universal Health Insurance System. He underlined the importance of encouraging private sector investment in healthcare and pharmaceuticals, contributing to the advancement of medical services in Egypt.

The spokesperson further noted that the President also discussed a proposal to establish the Egyptian Center for Disease Control and the Egyptian Center for Precision Medicine. The aim of this initiative is to ensure preparedness for global health challenges and pandemics, while strengthening the national healthcare system. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar presented updates on several presidential initiatives, including the initiative to eliminate surgical waiting lists and provide treatment at the state’s expense. In this context, the President stressed the importance of reducing surgical waiting times and providing urgent care for critical cases by expediting procedures and ensuring services reach the most vulnerable groups. He also instructed a study on implementing a program to use non-invasive glucose monitoring devices for children with type 1 diabetes.

Regarding the National Population Strategy, the Minister of Health and Population presented the key positive findings of the Egyptian Family Health Survey. Based on these results, the President directed the intensification of efforts to address population challenges by raising community awareness and implementing educational programs aimed at achieving sustainable population balance, ensuring a better quality of life for citizens.
