The Old Rent Law regulates what happens to commercial shops after the death of the original tenant. Mustafa Abdel Rahman, head of the Coalition of Old Property Owners, explained that the legal extension of the lease applies only to the son who continues the same commercial activity in the shop, provided that all legal requirements are met. This extension lasts for a maximum of five years only.
Abdel Rahman confirmed that if there is no heir who continues the same activity with the deceased tenant, the shop returns directly to the property owner. He also clarified that changing the commercial activity terminates the right to remain in the property and requires the shop to be handed back to the owner.

Article (8) of the Old Rent Law allows the tenant—or those eligible for contract extension—to request an alternative unit from the state, provided that they vacate and hand over the currently rented unit upon receiving the new one. The Cabinet is required to issue a decision within one month to set the rules, regulations, and responsible authorities for allocation, giving priority to original tenants.
The law grants priority to tenants when new units are offered, taking into account their social and geographic ties to ensure stability. This is conditional on submitting a formal request accompanied by a declaration committing to vacate the original unit.
