Minister of Housing Meets Jiangsu Fenghai Delegation from China to Discuss Cooperation in Seawater Desalination Projects

Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, met with a delegation from the Chinese company Jiangsu Fenghai to discuss potential cooperation in the field of seawater desalination. The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry of Housing, the New Urban Communities Authority, and several representatives from the utilities sector.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Minister welcomed the Chinese delegation, emphasizing that this visit reflects Egypt’s keenness to strengthen partnerships with China across various sectors, particularly in desalination — a field of strategic importance. He praised the company’s expertise and performance in this vital area, noting that the Egyptian state is implementing an integrated national plan based on three key pillars.

El-Sherbiny explained that the first pillar focuses on the quantitative aspect — increasing the production capacity of desalinated water by establishing large-scale plants with capacities reaching up to 500,000 cubic meters per day. He added that Jiangsu Fenghai has expressed its interest in contributing to this major initiative.

The second pillar, the Minister continued, aims to reduce construction and operational costs by integrating modern technologies within desalination plants. He highlighted that the company operates an advanced research center specializing in desalination and renewable energy, which supports the development of innovative technologies that can lower expenses. The company also manufactures key equipment and components required for desalination operations, giving it a strong competitive edge.

As for the third pillar, El-Sherbiny stated that it focuses on localizing the desalination industry within Egypt. He added that the company has been tasked with preparing a feasibility study to establish a factory dedicated to producing spare parts and essential components for desalination plants within the next two years. This initiative aims to boost local production and reduce dependency on imported materials in this critical sector.

For their part, representatives from Jiangsu Fenghai expressed their appreciation for the warm reception and their eagerness to strengthen cooperation with the Ministry of Housing.

They affirmed their readiness to share their advanced expertise tailored to Egypt’s water conditions and to integrate renewable energy solutions into desalination processes. The delegation also emphasized their interest in collaborating with Egyptian companies operating in this vital field.
