On May 21, 2025, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing and Utilities, held a meeting to discuss the ministry’s efforts in the field of water desalination. The meeting was attended by officials from the ministry and various affiliated bodies. The minister emphasized the importance of desalinating water from both the sea and underground wells, stressing the need for collaboration among all relevant sectors to achieve the desired objectives. The discussions covered current efforts and proposals to improve the operation mechanisms of desalination plants and networks. The minister directed the formation of a committee to assess the current state of desalination stations and enhance their efficiency, as well as to develop a vision for future needs and monitor ongoing projects.
The minister noted that the committee would study all proposals related to supporting this sector, whether coming from entities affiliated with the ministry or from the private sector. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the private sector in implementing these projects, whether through public-private partnership models or via the available mechanisms and facilitations for investors, with a focus on implementing the projects as soon as possible and bringing them into operation.
The Minister of Housing also stressed the importance of localizing the industry concerning all equipment necessary for desalination plants. He highlighted the need to incorporate modern technologies in the water desalination process. The minister added that the formed committee will hold weekly meetings to follow up on all procedures related to the water desalination file, with the aim of achieving tangible results on the ground.
