Minister of Housing Announces Water and Sanitation Projects in Dakahlia Governorate

Shereif El Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, announced significant developments in water and sanitation projects in Dakahlia Governorate over the past decade under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s administration. The ministry has completed 14 drinking water projects, including the construction and expansion of stations, with a capacity of 439,000 cubic meters per day, at a cost of 2.33 billion Egyptian pounds. Additionally, 34 wastewater projects have been implemented, with a capacity of 112,000 cubic meters per day, at a cost of 1.73 billion pounds.

Ongoing Drinking Water Projects

Minister El Sherbiny highlighted that several drinking water projects are currently being delivered and implemented in the governorate. These include six high reservoirs: Kafr El-Jawhari (500 m³), Rahmaniya, Al-Masara, and Mita Al-Az (1,000 m³ each), and Damas and Awlila (300 m³ each). Other ongoing projects include water networks for the Minya Al-Nasr station, Mita Ghamr water networks, and expansions for the Belqas and Jalia water stations, along with the Nabrouh water station.

Wastewater Projects Underway

The minister also noted ongoing wastewater projects in urban areas of Dakahlia. These projects include expansions of the Mansoura wastewater treatment plant, sewage services for new areas in Belqas, the completion of wastewater services in Mita Ghamr (including pumping stations in Dakadous, Al-Hagbi, East Al-Riah, and Imam Al-Shafi’i), and expansions of the Nabrouh wastewater treatment plant.

Rural Sewage Coverage

Ehab Khader, head of the National Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation, provided further insights, stating that there are currently 121 rural areas served by sanitation services in Dakahlia, representing 23.8% of the rural regions, with a population of 1.837 million, accounting for 35.3% of the rural population. Efforts are underway to extend sanitation services to 109 rural areas, comprising 22.2% of the rural regions, home to 1.417 million residents (27.3% of the rural population). Additionally, sanitation services are being extended to 26 rural areas, representing 5.2% of the rural regions, with a population of 479,000 (9.2% of the rural population). These initiatives are being carried out through the National Authority for Water and Sanitation and the local water and sanitation company.
