Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, has officially launched a nationwide competition titled “Oqoul” (Minds) for students of engineering, fine arts, and applied arts faculties in Egyptian universities. The competition, launched in collaboration with the Ministries of Local Development and Higher Education and Scientific Research, as well as the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate, aims to discover sustainable engineering solutions to the urban challenges that existing cities in Egypt face.
Minister El-Sherbiny emphasized that the competition presents a significant opportunity for students across different engineering disciplines to contribute innovative ideas that can improve Egypt’s urban environment. He noted that this initiative is designed to engage students in solving real-world challenges in their communities, while also enhancing their skills, nurturing their talents, and encouraging creative thinking. By working on practical problems, students will gain hands-on experience in addressing urban development issues, thereby bridging the gap between academic studies and practical application.
Dr. Abdelkhaleq Ibrahim, the Assistant Minister for Technical Affairs, further explained that the winners of the competition will have a unique opportunity to present their innovative engineering solutions at the prestigious World Urban Forum, which Egypt will host from November 4-8, 2024. He highlighted that the competition encourages students to think outside the box and create solutions for various urban issues, including housing, public spaces, road infrastructure, architectural identity, and services.
The competition aims to inspire students to not only think creatively but also to take an active role in shaping the future of Egypt’s cities. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance the quality of urban living, drawing on the creative potential of the younger generation. By leveraging their fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, the Ministry hopes to address long-standing urban challenges and create a more sustainable and livable environment for all Egyptians.
