Major Developments in Water and Sanitation Projects in Gharbia Governorate

Ministry of Housing

Engineer Sherif Shabiney, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, announced significant achievements in water and sanitation infrastructure over the past decade under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Key Achievements:

  • Water Projects: Completed 10 projects, including the construction and expansion of water stations and networks with a daily capacity of 300,000 cubic meters.
  • Sanitation Projects: Completed 343 projects in Gharbia Governorate, including initiatives under the first phase of the “Decent Life” presidential initiative to develop rural Egypt, with a total cost of approximately 7.3 billion EGP.

Ongoing Projects:

  • Water Supply: Five ongoing projects in Gharbia aim to enhance service and pressure, including:
    • The Qutour Water Network
    • Expansion of the Samanoud Water Station
    • Completion of the Basion Water Network (“Al-Ruba Line”)
    • Completion of the Water Networks in Mahalla al-Kubra
    • Completion of the Water Networks in Samanoud
  • Sanitation: Four urban sanitation projects are also underway:
    • Completion of Sanitation in Mahalla al-Kubra
    • Completion of Sanitation in Kafr El-Zayat
    • Wastewater Treatment Plant in Shubra Qas
    • Wastewater Treatment Plant in Qalloula

Rural Sanitation Services:

Major General Ihab Khidr, Head of the National Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation, highlighted that:

  • 205 rural areas in Gharbia benefit from sanitation services, covering 63.5% of rural areas and serving 2.9 million people, which is 79.5% of the rural population.
  • 86 rural areas are in the process of receiving sanitation services, representing 26.8% of rural areas and serving 598,000 people, which is 16.3% of the rural population. These efforts are part of the national “Decent Life” initiative and are implemented in coordination with the National Authority for Water and Sanitation and local water and sanitation companies.

These developments reflect the government’s commitment to improving water and sanitation infrastructure, enhancing living conditions, and achieving comprehensive rural development.
