Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, announced the start of electric current operation at the new Saint Catherine power substation, which has a capacity of 75 MVA. The station will supply electricity to the development project of the Great Transfiguration site, located on the Land of Peace in Saint Catherine City, Sinai. This announcement coincides with the celebrations marking the 43rd anniversary of Sinai Liberation, with the project being carried out by the Central Agency for Reconstruction, known as the Executive Agency for Sinai Reconstruction Projects.
The Minister of Housing emphasized that this achievement aligns with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, aimed at developing Saint Catherine City and restoring its esteemed status as one of the world’s sacred sites. The project also seeks to establish the New Saint Catherine City and maximize the potential of its tourism assets, which are characterized by historical, religious, environmental, and heritage significance, in line with sustainable development goals.
The Saint Catherine City development project aims to create a spiritual destination among the mountains surrounding the Sacred Valley, turning it into a global tourism hub that offers spiritual and mountain tourism experiences. The project includes the provision of tourism and recreational services and the development of the city while preserving its environmental and heritage character. As part of the efforts, essential electricity supply works are being implemented, including the construction of a new power substation, an overhead connection line, and the expansion of the Nuweiba substation.
The Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction announced the completion of all utility networks in the city, including the renewal of the Abu Rudeis/Saint Catherine water pipeline, which stretches 6.250 km, as well as the water supply, firefighting, sewage, rainwater drainage, and irrigation networks of various total lengths. Additionally, two sewage treatment plants have been constructed, and work is ongoing to complete floodwater drainage channels. Major General Wael Mostafa also explained that the telecommunications network and interlock paving roads have been completed, while efforts are underway to upgrade and expand the main road.
