Dr. Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, met with representatives of a global alliance interested in localizing the manufacturing of electric water motors, pumps, and smart meters in Egypt. The meeting also discussed the implementation of intelligent control and protection systems for residential, commercial, and industrial utilities.
Dr. Ismail reviewed the state’s efforts to localize the electromechanical equipment industry within drinking water and wastewater projects.
He highlighted the private sector’s role in localizing industries, particularly in the smart meter field. The Ministry of Housing aims to supply two million water meters annually to meet the needs of the Egyptian market amid the country’s rapid urban development.
The Deputy Minister discussed innovative solutions and alternatives with alliance representatives and the latest technological advancements in smart water meters. The discussions included various mechanical and electronic meter designs tailored to different applications and requirements.
Dr. Ismail reiterated the Ministry’s full support, through its affiliated entities across governorates and new cities, for the localization of electromechanical equipment manufacturing for drinking water and wastewater projects. This aligns with the state’s efforts to prioritize local components and advance domestic industries.
Interest in Local Manufacturing and Export Opportunities
Representatives of the alliance expressed their keen interest in localizing smart meter manufacturing and entering the Egyptian market as manufacturers. They also aim to export to Central and East African and Gulf nations, leveraging their presence in the Egyptian market.
The alliance representatives showcased various meter designs that cater to the Egyptian market’s needs. They highlighted that some products have undergone testing in compliance with standards and specifications. Moreover, they plan to commence manufacturing within three months, targeting an annual production of approximately 250,000 meters. The meters will feature a local component ratio exceeding 75% and will be competitively priced for the Egyptian market.
